About Djong Yun’s artworks : correspondence (็ธๆ)
At the foot of a mountain overlooking the clear waters of Namhae, a square-shaped studio is situated. The scenic beauty of Tongyeong harmoniously resonates with the bright moonlight. The view beyond the window, illuminated by the moon, is tranquil, while the artist’s work is abundant. The stickiness of wet paint and the smell of oil paint demonstrate the passion for creation and its continuity. The modern music echoing through the studio feels like a vivid correspondence of artistic unity and reunion. Artist Djong Yun unfolds her own artistic world, dreaming of a better world. Having traversed experiences in music and design, she quietly walks the path of a painter.
Yun engages with memory. Her “Memory” series is composed of memory and imagination. The artist’s imagination is grounded in her memories. Like the phrase, “The pure night sky’s Milky Way sparkled with star flowers throughout the night”, she deeply collects her past experiences to recreate them on the canvas of imagination. Imagination connects past memories acquired through the senses with the present. It involves accepting what is given in the moment and then recalling and merging memories once more. Deeply felt memories linger as cherished recollections. Emotions stimulate imagination to create memories, and in turn, those memories evoke emotions. Meanwhile, memory stimulates intuition. Direct intuition, given through the senses, bestows meaning upon us through concepts. Concepts based on memory, imagination and intuition serve as essential elements of creation. Works based on the memories of life reflect the artist’s aesthetic attitude created through intuition faced with the concrete world shaped by imagination.
Yun paints emotions. Through painting, she seeks to understand humanity more deeply. The act of painting becomes a subject of complete inner exploration and embodies a kind of courage and competitive will. She feels and captures various emotions that arise within her and translates them onto the canvas. With a clear and sharp eye that looks deep within, the artist observes objects and views the world with profound affection. Her early works include narratives of intimate self-disclosure. From the intriguing artistic memories of vibrant layers and scratches of crayon to personal family histories, she explores a variety of subjects including small objects around her, fish, birds, villages, alleyways, the moon, flowers, and trees. Yun attempts to balance representation and abstraction, experimenting with oil painting in a true sense. In the search for colors that range from bright and delicate to deep and heavy, her exploration shifts from objective aesthetic inquiries to subjective interpretations. From deep within the mountains to the wind-swayed reed fields, dew-kissed wildflowers, and unknown mountain birds, she seeks the essence of innate beauty. Her work strongly emphasizes the psychological elements of expressing inner emotions. She manifests her internal sense as a capacity of the mind, elevating it into an aesthetic experience. At times, she sharpens her emotional sensitivity to imbue her work with warmth and an Eastern mystery.
The artist reveals and responds to the emotions felt inside the inner being of humans. Rather than employing the techniques of imitation or representation, she captures unique emotions on the canvas. The fundamental meaning of art questions the intrinsic origins of the world and seeks answers. The painter discovers certain rules or essences in the world or nature through emotion and bestows them upon her works. Even the artist herself cannot fully explain how such works come into being. Baudelaire viewed painting as inherently related to the emotional dimension of humans. This emotional dimension, unlike the rational one, cannot be easily systematized or logically explained. Before any specific words, language, or concepts form a narrative, a certain feeling(sentiment) arises. Yun maintains silence regarding her works. It is difficult to explain them in terms of subjective emotions and personal sensations, and the issues of arbitrary and relative taste are also hard to address. Augustine answers questions about time in his Confessions: “If no one asks me, I know what it is; if I want to explain it to someone who asks, I cannot.” The same applies to the artist in relation to art. It is paradoxical to express the unspeakable through painting.
Her work is abstract. Abstraction is an art born of inductive experience, firmly rooted in the material world. The canvas of abstraction can be seen as a stage where the accumulation of information through experience is expressed. The order of abstraction reproduces imaginative forms constructed from experience on the canvas. Abstraction is ambiguous yet clear. It follows the value-neutral tradition of irrationalism, which remains faithful to human instincts and emotions, and modernism, which seeks the essence of art itself. Abstraction is connected to all possible realities we can conceive. It seeks a pure, independent state that is free from subject matter, originating from what has been experienced. Pure abstraction lacks distinct outlines and is a continuous qualitative change where elements blend and permeate one another. Yun's abstraction traverses an infinite space-time that cannot be divided, much like atonal music. Her work embodies a creative will that expresses compressed implications of intimate aesthetic experiences. The abstract works that seek the essence inherent in the world represent a high-level way of composing the human condition.
Abstraction expresses what lies beyond visual perception. Art, a creation of humans, serves as a tool to elevate individual worlds to the universal and is a process that completes the universal system of human existence. The artist draws the unpredictable reality into the realm of creation, experimenting and unveiling unknown new worlds. During the process, the painter repeatedly engages in ‘handling materials’. The primal act of painting begins with this repeated handling. The stickiness of oil paint and the continuous adjustment of its concentration lead to focus and immersion. The work reveals the self that struggles with the materials. During the painting process, elements such as the surrounding environment, moments of breath, actions, and postures enable an intimate encounter with oneself. The painter’s aesthetic insight, free from obsession with form, arises from contemplation that expresses pure emotions. This leads to a unique pleasure, akin to meditation or healing. The abstract canvas possesses psychological characteristics that can evoke new emotions, leading to an aesthetic and sensory unity. Through aesthetic pleasure, the artist's sensitivity attains a state of indifference. Forms dissipate, allowing for immersion in a meditative state. Like the dispersing ink in traditional landscape paintings, the canvas constructs a delicate and serene contemplative scene.
She paints the colors of emotions. The strange aura of abstraction that spreads beyond the canvas and the modulation of emotional colors are the essence of Yun’s painting. Just like flowers blooming in their season, the natural beauty stands out. The canvas seems layered with a mysterious beauty hiding in its depths. The colors infused with the artist's emotions are already abstract. The noble and splendid harmony of colors is a silver lining in a life of hardship. It captivates the gaze and heart of the viewer. The elegant and delicate colors, serene and harmonious, exude grace. The diverse colors and dense composition of the picture, which retains the materiality of oil painting, add a meditative energy. The artist remains faithful to the aesthetic experience inherent in painting and seeks a visual beauty. The dominant color of the canvas symbolizes a unique vitality. Color is life; the bright and lively central colors meet other colors, gliding and merging to create layers. Together with other colors, they express and generate vitality. The irregular dots, lines, and surfaces on the canvas converge to form a cohesive color sensation, unfolding the dynamism of life. It has the power to offer viewers an evoked aesthetic pleasure and awaken delicate emotional sensitivity.
The M series seeks the truth. The canvas is enveloped in a mysterious atmosphere. The energy within the square swirls and gathers before scattering again. The whole is one. While the canvas presents a solid form, the parts within M serises are decomposed and independent. It is a visual expression of the multilayered phenomena created by the existence of all things. Yun's M series selectively draw from the countless colors and forms of the universe. The meticulous and condensed compositional techniques of abstraction, using grids, encompass a sense of structural performativity. The process of creation leaves behind the visual experiences accumulated on the canvas like a performance. It represents a sensory selection of colors of paint and the layering of repeated meditation. The entangled, overlapping oil paints create unique textures on the canvas, traces of primal acts. Through the serene contemplation within M serises, the artist confronts abstraction, liberated from all relationships. Like Schopenhauer's specific perceptual mode of beauty, she experiences the "pure will-less, painless, timeless subject of knowledge." Aesthetic contemplation reaches pure recognition of perception. No longer an individual, the pure reality is abstracted into an ideal. The M serises canvas symbolically represents the ultimate journey of self-discovery toward the freedom of the soul. When the petals begin to open, the horizon of aesthetic recognition bursts forth in an instant, filled with abundance and richness.
Art is a gift for survival rather than merely a possession of humanity. Artwork can be seen as a product of harmony that responds to the demands of the times. Art is a space where freedom and hospitality take place. The artist unfolds contemporary art that corresponds with the current era. Yun’s work, vividly expressing delicate emotions and the essence of the heart, is bound to correspond with viewers. The canvas shaped by the artist’s life prompts reflection on life itself. Through creation, filled with the fragrance of humanity, she wishes for the continuity of life and the touching experience of living. As the saying goes, “Truly great art captures the human heart,” Yun’s work possesses an energy that moves and stirs the hearts of people. The abstract expression borne from the truth-seeking act confronts the sounds of waves of Namdo.
